Compost Cab

Check out this great article on a compost cab project taking root in Washington, D.C. The innovator is Jeremy Brosowsky, who has an interest in urban agriculture and local food access, and wanted a way to utilize the food waste that many city dwellers create. The result is an $8 per week compost pick up fee, and a cab that picks up the compost and delivers it to nearby urban farms to turn into rich soil to grow food. Brosowsky was able to figure out the exact amount of compost his cab would need to pick up in order to make the project carbon neutral (to off-set the carbon put out by running the cab). He feels this can easily be done, and the project is now underway in D.C. Brosowsky wants to build the program and eventually have the city provide the service. (I am imagining hybrid cabs to haul the compost around in) I am continually amazed at such innovative, green ideas, such as this one, or our own Veggie Van. Most of you are probably familiar with the Local Matters Veggie Van, which delivers fresh, local, delicious produce to areas in the city that lack access to this food. The van is also equipped with an EBT machine for food stamp purchases. Please see the links below for the full compost cab article and our Farm to Fork/Veggie Van page.
