Unhappy Meals
This is my first week of work at Local Matters so I began reading articles by Michael Pollan to help get in the right mindset. One of his past articles, Unhappy Meals, caught my eye since my family and I are working on eating healthier.
In the article, his main piece of advice is to eat “food”. Pollan describes “food” as natural substances, not packaged and processed foods. He suggests eating only food that your great-great-grandmother would recognize as food, which rules out many popular brands.
Pollan then goes on to explain nutritionism and the role the government, scientists, and journalism have played in society’s perception of eating healthy.
In the article, Pollan provides nine easy and logical methods to begin eating the right way.
1. Eat “food”.
2. Avoid food products that have health claims.
3. Avoid food that has unfamiliar or unpronounceable ingredients, or contains high-fructose corn syrup.
4. Shop less at supermarkets and more at farmer’s markets where you can get fresh local foods.
5. Pay more for your food to get better quality, but eat less of it.
6. Eat a large portion of vegetables, primarily leaves.
7. Observe and eat following a traditional culture, such as traditional Japanese, French, or Greek meals. Observing and following how a culture eats, is just as important as what it eats.
8. Cook your meals and if possible plant a garden.
9. Eat a wide range of foods and spices.
