The Land of Bread and Cheese
Last night’s Grilled Cheese Throwdown featured delicious combinations of Ohio-made
breads and cheeses with fantastic toppings, sauces, soups, and sides made from local ingredients. Who knew that Ohio was the “land of bread and cheese?”
Chef Kevin Caskey from Skillet, Rustic. Urban. Food. was the crowd favorite and the big winner for best taste and best presentation for his goat cheese and cheddar sandwich with arugula and a drizzle of truffle oil – a regular on the Skillet menu. Amateur Erin Caricofe’s deconstructed pimento cheese sandwich tied Chef Chris Wank from MoJoe lounge and his sandwich with sauces featuring Ohio bacon and maple syrup for most creative. Chef Wank also served up roasted Ohio Honeycrisp apples with a caramel drizzle. Kaela King from Kitchen Little/North Market Poultry and Game finished a close third for most creative. She incorporated pumpkin spiced goat cheese in her sandwich.
Donnie Austin of House Wine featured local sourdough bread with cheese from Oakvale
and a roasted tomato soup on top. Laura Bratton incorporated slices of potato into her delicious sandwich and Chef Alex Silverman from Dirty Franks combined local Honeycrisp apples with delicious cheddar for his entry.
Over three hundred lucky locals got to enjoy these warm and gooey grilled cheeses from four impressive amateurs and for chefs. Our quick exit poll revealed two clear results: not a bad sandwich in the bunch, and everyone loves grilled cheese!
