Ain't no bones about it!
bone breaking stating “America’s Bone Health Crisis.” I don’t know about you, but when I hear or see the word "crisis" I tend to panic, wondering what can be done to change it IMMEDIATELY.
As most people think calcium is a great helper to fight this crisis on “America’s Bone Health” but we are not able to effectively absorb the calcium into our bodies (via intestines) without the presence of good ole vitamin D and Vitamin K. Vitamin K, on one hand, is easy to obtain from a diet containing dark leafy greens. Now, as some may know that the easiest way to get vitamin D is from the sun. (The cholesterol in the fatty tissues of your skin creates vitamin D for your body. How great are these little machines?!) But when it’s February and overcast, what is one to do to get it?
Well, most are able to get vitamin D in decent amounts from consumption of egg yolks and oily fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel. Because of our ever-changing technology, many of the foods we eat are fortified with vitamin D such as milk and yogurt. For those who are vegan it may be beneficial during this time of year to take a supplement. Garden of Life makes a vegan supplement that carries Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Calcium.(triple Pow!)
With the following link I found some awesome resources for Vitamin D and how it helps and how too much can harm and the right amounts for certain populations such as the post-menopausal and pregnant.
Eat well and stay strong!
