Celebrating the New Year with your pocket on a diet
Ok, so it's old news that we are in a recession. As a person that keeps up on the news, I hear that we are in what is called a "Double Dip", which I wish was as sweet as the ice cream, but it means that we are going to have a short reprieve from the recession and will fall back in for a short while. Anticipating this reemergence of tight pockets, here are some great money saving tips for the perfect New Year's par-tay!

DRINKS: Serve bubbly cocktails
Opt for Prosecco or Cava instead of Champagne which can save you $20-$30 a bottle. By simply adding fruit juice (cranberry to make poinsettias or pomegranate to make fizzes) you are able to make the bubbly stretch as well. Also buying LOCAL wines cuts back on $$$
STARTERS: Two words: Bread, Cheese
Avoid the fancy-schmancy crackers and go for baguette slices (which are pretty cheap: think Melba toast) covered with cheese (Ohio has some of the best cheeses for a great price: try Canal junction Farmstead cheese, Blue Jacket Dairy or olde Tyme cheeses, all local, all delicious! ) 3/4 an ounce should be sufficient per baguette.
MAIN DISHES: Vegetarian is always cheap
Eggs are cheaper than steak any day and are not just for breaking your fast. Whip up a nice quiche which is both hearty and delicious (and cheap!)
DESSERT: K.I.S.S. (keep it simple silly)
For dessert, scatter orange segments on a platter with dark chocolate bars and let people fend for themselves. A very gourmet flavor, very simple display makes all parties happy!
DECOR: Bust out your collection!
Whatever you collect, use that as your place settings and make a statement. Whether it's seashells from your last vaycay or Matchbox cars, it will be a novel and fun party!
Enjoy your New Year and just make sure you have a DD if you are driving!
