When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May...
When the weather is the way it is, staying in is the best option unless you are travelling via sled dog. When I stay in I love to try out new recipes.
When I went to pick up my Fresh Market Bag @ CRC my mother pointed out a nice little batch of habaneros that were donated from the Greener Grocer. So, in my boredom (because school was cancelled), I decided to use the chiles in my chili.
*CAUTION* use gloves!

While we live and we learn, I learned my lesson when I woke up Wed. morning (made chili Tues. night) to rub my eye, and you guessed it, almost burned it out of the socket! I tried many different home remedies to get the burning of my hand to subside (eye was easily take care of) such as milk (which wasn't fatty enough, my BF uses 2%), toothpaste, rubbing alcohol, but what finally worked was a mix of dishwashing liquid (grease cutting to cut through the oily capsaicin) and my all-natural household cleaner.
So, in tribute my 250,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) friend, the habanero, I have included a recipe for turkey chili similar to mine.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 lb ground turkey (I cooked with homedried sage and "no salt" seasoning)
- 1 small yellow onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
- 1/2 cup chopped carrot
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 cups cooked red kidney beans (about 2- 15oz cans) (I do one of these & one of spicy pinto beans)
- 2 cups chopped canned tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon hot chili powder (This is where I added 1 small habanero)
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat.
- Add turkey and saute until done (about 5 minutes).
- Add onion and carrot to skillet; cook, stirring constantly, until vegetables are tender (about 7 minutes).
- Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer.
- Add beans, tomatoes with liquid, molasses, pepper, and chili powder to skillet.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer about 30 minutes, until mixture thickens.
- Stir in lemon juice and parsley.
- Serve immediately.
