Healthful food is preventative medicine
The healthcare system has been unable to adequately address diet-related disease and its complications for a variety of reasons, partly stemming from its emphasis on treatment rather than prevention particularly when it comes to chronic, lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Local Matters recognizes that change won’t occur overnight.
We partner to complement existing chronic-disease programming, such as Diabetes Self-Management Programs at OhioHealth, Central Ohio Diabetes Association, and Mount Carmel Health Systems, and provide extension activities to further support and educate patients through Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters™ program. Cooking Matters is a 6-week, hands-on cooking and nutrition course developed to provide families at-risk of hunger with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make nutritious and affordable meals. Local Matters delivers the Cooking Matters program, with the assistance of AmeriCorps members. Click here to learn more about our work as an AmeriCorps host site.
While Cooking Matters is geared towards low-resourced individuals, we can also provide this support to workplaces and other clients through our Wellness Matters program.
Local Matters also directly educates and encourages healthcare workers to take a “food as medicine” approach, allowing physicians and other medical professionals to become educators and supporters of healthful diets for their patients. We partner with The Ohio State University College of Nursing, Mount Carmel College of Nursing, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Step By Step Pediatrics │ Central Ohio Primary Care, and Molina Healthcare.
