Food Matters

Strong bodies

Established in 2008, Food Matters is Local Matters’ longest-running program. At the center of Food Matters is a 24-week food and ecology curriculum that provides children with an understanding of what healthful food is, where it comes from, how it grows, and how to prepare it.

Food Matters’ holistic, multicultural and multi-sensory approach is unique among children's nutrition education. The lessons give kids a language to talk about food, and help them understand the relationship between food and strong bodies. Kids emerge from the course with an appreciation and enthusiasm for fresh, healthy, locally-grown foods which serves as a foundation for lifelong healthy eating habits.

Summer Curriculum

Summer ProgrammingThe establishment of Growing Matters in 2011 allowed us to expand Food Matters beyond the typical school year. The abbreviated summer program—offered to summer camps, Head Start sites and Freedom Schools in summer of 2011—includes a greater focus on ecology as well as hands-on outdoor lessons in learning gardens installed by the Growing Matters team.
